My Favorite Places to Hang Out in Los Angeles

Carl from Van Nuys recently wrote me asking about my favorite places to hang out in Los Angeles. Well, being a Southern California native there are lots of places that I love—from Palm Springs and Ventura down to San Diego. But my favorite place to hang out would have to be the beach. I make it a point to get to the beach almost every weekend, whether it’s taking a walk on the sand alone or meeting friends for a meal at a beachside restaurant.

Another favorite thing to do is go to sporting events. The Lakers are a true passion of mine and I’ll only miss a game if I’m out of town or sick.

The Findings Are in From Our Harris Interactive Sleep Study!

December 14th, 2009

Life has become a little more difficult for most of us in the last several years, so I figured that moving into a new decade people might have different needs and concerns when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep than they’ve had in the past. Being in the mattress business for nearly 30 has allowed me to get information about how people sleep in lots of different ways.

I get research from the various mattress companies we work with, sleep studies from universities and private researchers, and of course lots of anecdotal information from the thousands of customers who’ve visited our stores in the last three decades. But I wanted more detailed info about what you, the consumer, need and expect from Sit ‘n Sleep so we can help you get the sleep you so desperately need.

That’s why we commissioned a Consumer Sleep Research study from Harris Interactive to find out as much as I could about current patterns of sleep. Here are some of the study’s findings:

  • Well over one-half (58 percent) of adults often feel sick or not rested when they sleep on an old or uncomfortable mattress.
  • Half of all respondents exercise less without a good night’s sleep.
  • Almost 2/3 of full and part time workers feel that an old or uncomfortable mattress affects their performance at work.

My Personal Secret for a Good Night’s Sleep

December 4th, 2009

mattress-larry-miller(2)A reader from Valencia wrote and wants to know my personal secret for a good night’s sleep. Well, there are several things that are a must: First, the room has to be pretty dark with no distractions. I turn off all electronics and sometimes use a wave or white noise machine to block out any sounds that might keep me from falling asleep. Also, I keep my room at a moderate temperature and make sure not to drink caffeine or eat sugar hours before bedtime. I even keep my alcohol intake to a minimum.

And, I know that as important as a comfortable mattress is for a good night’s sleep, it’s essential that I have a great pillow too … one that’s comfortable and not more than two years old.

What Kind of Mattress Do I, Larry Miller, Sleep On?

November 9th, 2009

mattress-larry-miller(2)When people meet me at social gatherings or recognize me on the street the first thing out of their mouth is usually, “you’re killing me Larry!” The next thing that happens … they want to know what kind of mattress I sleep on.

For the first time anywhere, I, Larry Miller, the president of Sit ‘N Sleep will publicly reveal, the bed I sleep on…actually…the beds. I don’t sleep on one particular mattress, which would be like admitting to having a favorite child.

L.A.’s Worst Mattress Contest: Enter Now For a Shot At Some Great Prizes!

October 12th, 2009

larry-and-irwinRecently a customer told me that his mattress was the worst I was ever going to see. He told me to prepare my delivery team for what they were about to witness when they dropped off his new mattress and carted off his old one. I had visions of a bed riddled with bullet holes, covered in blood and cordoned off with police tape. And that vision got me thinking about all the used mattresses I’ve seen throughout my almost 40 years at Sit ‘n Sleep.

I’ve seen lots of stains, exposed springs and mattresses flattened on one side by the weight of their owners. I’ve also seen gaping holes and frayed corners caused by bored or angry pets. I’ve even seen a mattress cut in half by an angry spouse. Then it hit me. Is there a mattress out there that’s so bad, so disfigured, so awful it could actually be… the worst mattress in Los Angeles?

Replace Every Eight: Because Your Mattress Doubles Its Weight!

August 26th, 2009

Boy, I’ve never experienced the kind of rabid response I’m getting to Sit ‘n Sleep’s latest television commercial, but then again I’ve never worn a gas mask or cut a mattress open with a knife in an ad before.

Replace Every Eight Sit ' N Sleep

If you haven’t seen our new Sit ‘n Sleep commericial, I mention that over a period of eight years your mattress can almost double in weight due to … well … sweat, dead skin and all the mites who move into your mattress to dine there.

Everyday people I run into are in disbelief. They can’t believe the mattress they lay on every night has so much going on inside… and not in a good way.

I feel badly that I’m the one who has to break the news to them but I feel obligated. That’s why the rule is: replace every eight!

Irwin’s Not Dead! (He’s Just Taking a Break.)

July 28th, 2009

larry-and-irwinTo the legion of concerned Irwin fans, I am happy to announce that Irwin is very much alive, rested and ready to step back into the recording studio after a brief hiatus to pronounce that I, Larry Miller, am killing him!

It started as a rumor, then a series of emails, and then a frantic phone call from a relative… Was it true? Was Irwin my accountant really dead? I immediately called to see if he was in fact okay and Irwin, shocked by the news of his untimely death, scolded me for disturbing him while he was watching “MythBusters” on the Discovery Channel.

Why Are Your Stores Called Sit ‘n Sleep Anyway? Part 2: The Inside Story

July 21st, 2009

"Shogun Influenced Sit 'n SleepI went on a trip to Japan in the late 1970’s and one night I ended up sleeping on something called a Futon. I’d never heard of one or seen one before. It was a soft mattress on a frame that you could use as a bed and then adjust to become a small sofa.

At the time I thought that was pretty neat.

I got back to California and the miniseries “Shogun” about Japanese warriors was a big hit, Americans were starting to eat sushi … so I figured maybe they’ll sleep on this bed/chair thing from Japan. At the time there were only two other places in all of Los Angeles where you could even find a Futon…

At the time there were only two other places in all of Los Angeles where you could even find a Futon. One was a tiny store in an area called Little Tokyo and the other was an even smaller store in a predominantly Japanese area of west Los Angeles. So I went ahead and imported a Futon from Japan and had the mattress part copied. But I had an impossible time finding anyone who could make the adjustable frame. Finally after many frustrating calls and trips everywhere I found someone who could make the frame…in Brazil!

Meanwhile, my dad (who was also my business partner) thought I was completely nuts. He told me, “Nobody is going to sleep on that bag of cotton!”

Why Are Your Stores Called Sit ‘n Sleep Anyway? Part 1: The Incorrect Guesses

July 19th, 2009

“I just don’t get it…where are all the chairs? Did you run out?” Years ago a customer from Studio City wondered why a store called Sit ‘n Sleep wouldn’t have a single chair for sale! And he’s not the only one.

I’m often amused when people are baffled by our name. I think almost everyone in Southern California knows by now that we sell mattresses because they’ve been hearing our ads since the early eighties, and we’ve sold more mattresses than any other chain in America.

Instead of giving you the answer right away, I thought you’d enjoy reading some of my favorite guesses customers have come up with over the years.
